Internet real estate is hot property at South Florida auction
Bidders spent more than $4.7 million to buy the
hottest Internet property at a Web domain auction in Hollywood.
They say money can't buy happiness, but $2.5 million can buy you
Hell.com.
Hundreds of domain names were up for auction Friday, and bidders spent
more than $4.7 million to get their hands on the hottest Internet property
at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Domain Conference and Expo in Hollywood.
''Domain names are the real estate of the Internet,'' said Marc
Ostrofsky,
a bidder and president of Houston-based Internet REIT, an Internet real estate
broker.
The chance to own a hot domain name brought in bidders from 13 different
countries to the invitation-only auction at the Westin Diplomat. Bids went
into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the highest to sell was
Cameras.com for $1.5 million.
Ostrofsky said one of the biggest factors in buying a name is whether
the name can be transformed into a brand. For instance, Deal.us had
no takers, but Sweatpants.com went for $8,500.
The growing trend of direct navigation, where people bypass search
engines
and just type in what they want followed by a .com, has lead to big demand
for generic website names such as elections.com and tall.com, which were
among the 314 domain names up for auction Friday.
Ostrofsky started getting involved in the domain name business in
1995
when he bought Business.com for $150,000. As a publisher, he planned to use
the name for a business magazine. Years later, he sold the name for $7.5
million.
Ostrofsky's company now owns 400,000 domain names, including cablebox.com,
which Ostrofsky nabbed at the auction for $9,000.
Larry Fischer, vice president of SmartName.com, bought several names
at the auction, including Sail
boat.com for $120,000, which included the ownership of
1-800-sailboat.Fischer
said the two combined for that price was ``a steal.''
Some of the hottest sells were for the newly released extension .mobi,
which was
created for websites meant for cellphone browsing.
Pinky Brand, director of new markets at dotMobi, said the .mobi domain
names
were released publicly in September and have been selling fast.
''People think you can jam a .com on a mobile phone,'' Brand said,
but it is often
hard to navigate a Web page on a phone. His company owns 5,700 .mobi names,
which they are auctioning off in stages.
At Friday's auction, Wow.mobi sold for $9,000, and Gossip.mobi sold
for $5,000.
Bidders cheered when Flowers.mobi was sold for $200,000 to Rick Schwartz,
chief executive of T.R.A.F.F.I.C.
Not all domains names had takers, though. With a starting price of
more
than $2.5 million, Hell.com wasn't hot enough to sell.
''People are thinking their names are worth more,'' Ostrofsky said.
He said
that's the same reason DSL.com didn't sell for its starting bid of $4 million.
But,
maybe they will appreciate soon. ''We're in the bottom of the first inning
here,'' he said.
